Public Policy Advocacy Tips

Here are just a few tips to keep in mind when communicating with your elected officials:

Tip One:
You have information and experience that is valuable to a legislator or other elected official. Most will welcome hearing your perspective.

Tip Two:
Developing relationships with legislators and administrators is as valuable as getting your point across. Relationships with staff are often as important as relationships with legislators. With term limits in Florida, staff relationships are even more important.

Tip Three:
You don’t have to be an expert. If you can’t answer a question, say that you will find out the answer for them. Never exaggerate or mislead. Always follow up with the requested information.

Tip Four:
Keep the “bigger perspective” in mind as you present your position. Legislators must balance a large number of interests. They appreciate people who understand that.

Tip Five:
Don’t argue. Disagreement on issues is not personal. Current antagonists are future allies, so developing a relationship is more important than agreeing on a particular point.

Tip Six:
You have only a brief time with the legislator and he or she will see many people in a day. Keep your message simple and direct. Each member of the delegation should receive the same message.

Tip Seven:
Follow up your visit with a personal note of thanks. Answer any questions and reinforce your message.
Mark your calendar for a follow up letter or visit to
continue building a relationship.
