The mission of these HOT Shots, United Way Hands On Tampa Bay volunteers, didn’t include a jungle. Rather in this sequel, the HOT volunteers raked, landscaped, painted, and cleaned up the Bay Pines VA Healthcare Campus in St. Petersburg on Saturday, April 5 as part of Hands On Tampa Bay Day For Donnell Singleton,

Bay Pine’s project manager of the event, the hard work of the HOT volunteers provided immeasurable support to Bay Pines for the second consecutive year.

“This is phenomenal,” said Singleton of the United Way volunteer efforts. Following the morning long projects, Singleton spoke to what that support means to Bay Pines. Last year alone, volunteers collected 2,000 bags of trash weighing in at 32 tons; washed more than 120 Bay Pines vehicles, and landscaped 50 yards of red mulch at the campus. “(This volunteer) work would take our staff 10 years to accomplish.” Although the numbers for 2008 are still in the works, they are expected to be just as impressive.

Nearly 400 volunteers joined in on the 19 projects throughout the sprawling campus. Coastal clean up, painting parking signs and benches, landscaping, and visiting with Bay Pines veterans were just some of the morning activities.

At the end of Hot Shots, the guy got the girl and he saved the day. The same could be true for the HOT volunteers, improving the quality of life for Bay Pines VA residents and their families.
