More than 550 people called into the United Way of Tampa Bay phone bank on Jan. 15 to help the victims of the Haitian earthquake. Our friends at WFLA NewsChannel 8 provided the space, the technology and the air time and by the end of the two and a half hours, you responded with close to $30,000.

Our corporate partners responded too, with donations of funds and supplies. All together, the Tampa Bay community sent $158,000 of their hard-earned dollars to help the residents of the devastated country through United Way of Tampa Bay. Through our partnerships with organizations on the ground in Haiti, our $158,000 is being used for:

• Water purification system (served 480 people)
• Medical lab tests for clinic patients (for a one-month period)
• Wheelchairs for 200 patients unable to walk out of 18 hospitals/clinics
• Houses built for 16 families
• Food, water, and medical supplies provided to orphanages/children
